Questions

Why is the backing bigger than my quilt?

Layers shift while quilting and longarm frames need room to clamp. 4 in per side is typical.

Which way should backing seams run?

Whichever uses less fabric. Either works.

How is binding calculated?

It adds up all four sides, adds 12 in for the corners and joining the ends, then divides by the usable length of each strip after the diagonal joins.

Should I use wide back fabric?

Wide backs (108 in) cover most quilts up to queen with no seams.
